JCB has launched the 520X crawler excavator, a new 50-tonne class model that expands its X-Series range and completes the Heavyline line-up alongside the 370X and 420X.

Weighing 52–57 tonnes, the 520X can be specified with either a 6.9m reach boom or a 6.5m mass excavation boom, with arm and bucket options tailored to different applications.

It offers up to 11.8m of digging reach, 7.8m of digging depth and 7.5m of dump height, with tearout forces of up to 279kN at the dipper and 318kN at the bucket.

Power comes from a Cummins X12 diesel engine rated at 298kW (400hp), paired with twin hydraulic pumps delivering 404 l/min each and supported by efficiency-focused hydraulic and cooling features.

Undercarriage options include fixed or variable track gauge set-ups, with a choice of track pads and fixed or hydraulically removable counterweights.

JCB says the 520X complements the 40-tonne class 420X, which is designed for demanding duties such as quarrying, demolition, aggregate production and mass excavation.

Compared with the 370X, the 420X features stronger front-end components, larger cylinders and improved lifting and breakout performance.

It also gains a larger undercarriage, stronger track motors and upgraded slew components, improving stability, lifting capability and tractive effort.

The 420X is powered by a 240kW (321hp) Stage V diesel engine, with higher engine speed, increased hydraulic flow and Auto Boost fitted as standard.

Both models are available with an optional Heavy-Duty Pro Pack, adding extra protection and foldable side walkways for easier maintenance access.

All X-Series machines benefit from JCB’s CommandPlus cab, specified with a heated and ventilated operator’s seat with electric lumbar adjustment. The JCB UX user interface is standard, incorporating a 10in full colour touchscreen monitor that can be customised to suit individual operator preferences, with bespoke hotkeys for rapid access to regularly used functions. JCB has introduced keyless start on the X-Series, and the monitor allows operators to create up to 25 user profiles to save customised joystick and switch choices.

The cab is ROPS certified as standard and features JCB’s 2-Go hydraulic isolation system. A high-definition 360 camera is fitted as standard and integrated into the UX display, while 14 LED working lights deliver visibility in all lighting conditions. Standard JCB LiveLink telematics monitoring provides real-time data including fuel consumption, idling times and fuel levels, alongside service warnings, maintenance requirements and remote geolocation functions.
