JCB have unveiled a major innovation with the launch of the VM118D, a 12-tonne single drum soil compactor which is the world’s first machine of its kind to meet EU Stage V emissions standards without the need for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
Built as a global platform, the VM118D is a hybrid of proven JCB components. The front end, including the drum assembly, comes from the 116D model found in non-legislated markets, while the rear is taken from the India-spec VM117 Stage V machine. Together, they form a robust, emissions-compliant package that’s easy to operate, simple to maintain, and ready for tough conditions.
Powering the machine is JCB’s 430 diesel engine, producing 55kW of power. Crucially, it hits Stage V without the usual DEF and SCR headaches. This makes the VM118D the only 10-tonne-plus compactor in the world that achieves this emissions benchmark without requiring extra fluids, cutting operational costs and service time.
The vibratory drum delivers up to 256kN of centrifugal force and features selectable frequencies of 32Hz and 36Hz with amplitudes of 1.8mm and 0.8mm, ensuring adaptable compaction performance for various ground conditions. The thickened drum shell (28mm plus an added 10mm) gives it the kind of durability contractors demand for aggressive applications.
The four-mode traction system (Work, Travel, Gradient, and Padfoot shell) gives it a rock-solid grip in challenging terrain, offering up to 55% gradient climbing capability. Whether working on steep embankments, heavy clay soils, or compacting sub-base in urban zones, the VM118D delivers consistent results with fewer passes.
Operator comfort hasn’t been left behind either. The machine features a brand-new ROPS/FOPS cab with air conditioning, heating, flat-glass windows for easy replacement, and JCB’s intuitive UX 7” touchscreen, already a hit in the X-Series excavators. Inside, everything’s ergonomically laid out, and external visibility is excellent thanks to the low bonnet line and optimised cab design.
For digital oversight, the VM118D includes JCB LiveLink telematics with a five-year subscription, plus the option of JCB’s INTELLICOMPACTION system for those needing precision tracking of ground conditions and compaction progress. Maintenance is streamlined too, with ground-level access to all key service points and a wide-opening bonnet making daily checks refreshingly hassle-free.
JCB has clearly focused on real-world needs with this release: less time spent on maintenance, more time compacting, and fewer headaches around emissions compliance. With padfoot drum variants set to follow, the VM118D is poised to make a strong impact on sites across Europe and beyond.
